Men Therapy Session

Compassionate, Professional, Provocative, Powerful!

Maintaining sound hearing health is of paramount importance for musicians.  Musicians rely on their critical listening skills to perceive the many subtleties that affect music making such as:  discernment of pitch and intonation, interpretation of dynamics, measurement of shades of color and timbre, interactions with fellow musicians, localization (determining where sound is coming from), and specificity (discerning sounds when there is background sound or noise).

Loss of hearing or the development of an auditory perceptual disorder can create a devastating and profound impact not only occupationally, but emotionally as well.  Rehabilitation is possible, even in cases when the injury is heightened by post-traumatic stress.

Music-Induced Hearing Loss (MIHL) is preventable. Education and intervention can help avoid acoustic injury.  Injury prevention is the key to enjoyment for music making and music listening, regardless of your age.  My background as an audiologist, hypnotherapist, and solution-focused counsellor enables me to offer you or your child:

  • Diagnostic Hearing Testing (Includes otoacoustic emission testing to investigate 'hidden hearing loss')
  • Auditory Processing Assessment (Includes Temporal Processing Testing)
  • Hi-Fidelity Musician’s Ear Plugs
  • Custom Musician’s Ear Plugs
  • In-Ear Monitors
  • Therapeutic Sound Generators/Hearing Aids
  • Hearing Wellness and Conservation Workshops
  • Performance Coaching (performance strategies, stage fright, performing well under stress)

Additionally, individualized treatment for auditory perception or sound sensitivity disorders is available for:

  • Acoustic Shock Syndrome
  • Decreased Sound Tolerance
  • Diplacusis
  • Hyperacusis
  • Misophonia
  • Phonophobia
  • Tinnitus
  • Tonic Tensor Tympani Syndrome

Every musician presents with a unique response to their acoustic injury.  Overcoming acoustic injury is possible through education, understanding, and daily work toward re-establishing a sound relationship with your own acoustic landscape.  I am committed to helping you navigate the road to recovery through a customized treatment program drawing on the best evidence-based techniques available.

Your initial consultation will include an opportunity to co-create a customized treatment plan that makes sense for you.  Education, along with evidence-based techniques may include Hyperacusis and Tinnitus Retraining Therapy, Misophonia Management, Solution-Focused Counselling, Guided Mindfulness Meditation, Hypnotherapy, and/or Music Listening Therapy.

In some cases referral to other professionals may be recommended as part of the treatment plan.
